How did we get here?
Thirteen years ago Maslins received its first Google review. It was five stars, and the word that jumped out was: “responsive”.
Not glamorous. But something that really makes a difference to our clients. Maslins started in a spare room in 2009, and two hundred five-star reviews later, we’re taking a moment to ask: how did we get here?
We’re all about the people
The team started growing slowly. Julie joined in 2013 as the first non-family member, and after her, numbers grew steadily. By 2015, the first Maslins trainee had qualified in-house. This was the beginning of a story of training, development and growth, that continues today.
The team holds seven ACCA qualifications (with ten more in progress) and four Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA) qualifications (with two in progress). In 2023, Ollie gave us a moment to remember: he scored 94% in the ACCA Advanced Taxation exam – the highest mark in the world! In a global qualification sat by students across multiple countries, that’s pretty extraordinary.
The same year, Julie was named best contractor accountant at the Contracting Awards, following on from Gareth who took the title in 2022. That year we also won our first firm award Best Contractor Accountancy under 1,000 clients. And in November 2025, Maslins was crowned Best Contractor Accountancy Firm (1,000–3,000 clients).
None of this happened by accident.
A strong partnership
Back in 2009, Maslins signed up as an accounting partner with a then little-known cloud-based start-up called FreeAgent. It didn’t seem significant at the time, but it was a turning point.
Our client numbers were boosted by contractors and freelancers who were using FreeAgent and were looking for support. This gave us the launchpad for our growth.
Today, Maslins is a FreeAgent Platinum Partner, and FreeAgent is mentioned time and again in our client reviews as an intuitive, easy-to-use tool that takes the pain out of bookkeeping.
A big change in ownership
A huge landmark in our story came in 2021, when Maslins became employee owned. Every member of the team is now a co-owner, which means every client is looked after by someone with a genuine stake in the quality of the service they deliver.
It’s why client-to-accountant ratios stay low. It’s why the vast majority of queries get answered the same day. It’s why a huge number of our 200+ Google reviews name individual team members. And it’s why, across all those reviews, the same themes keep surfacing: knowledgeable, helpful, responsive, and our personal favourite “almost making accounts enjoyable”.
Almost enjoyable. When people are talking about their accounts. We’ll take it.
Supporting you on your journey
This phrase, which we use as our strapline, means something on a few levels. It’s what clients describe in their own words, over and over again. They talk about us taking the weight of accounting off their shoulders, letting them focus on the work they actually set up their business to do, and being there when something complicated comes up, not just at year end.
It’s also what we try to do for our team: supporting them on their career journey, helping them qualify, develop and grow.
